چکیده

Abstract Across languages, structures with non-canonical word order have been shown to be problematic for both child and adult heritage speakers. To investigate the linguistic child-level factors that modulate speakers’ difficulties orders, we examined comprehension production of three Mandarin in 5- 9-year-old Mandarin-English children compared them age-matched Mandarin-speaking monolingual adults. Specifically, how properties, such as linear order, presence or absence morphosyntactic cues, surface structural overlap between well factors, chronological age current home language use affect acquisition their peers. Results showed although could they did not show monolingual-level sensitivity passive-related morphology. Additionally, produced more canonical SVO which is shared English Mandarin, preferred reverse interpretations comprehension. These responses were taken evidence cross-linguistic influence from majority minority language. Finally, caused speakers, performance was modulated by structure improved age, over above use.

The effect of canonical word order on the production and comprehension of pseudoclefts in L2

This study investigated the effect of word order and age on the production and comprehension of pseudoclefts in L2 across two experiments. For each experiment 16 female students aged between 179 and 210 months were recruited from a secondary school. These students were divided into two groups based on their age range; one group for investigating the effect of word order and age on the productio...

Coupling among speakers during synchronous speaking in English and Mandarin

The laboratory task of synchronous speech is considered as an experimental analog of the ubiquitous phenomenon of choral speaking. We here consider some implications that arise if we regard two synchronous speakers as mutually entrained systems. Firstly, the degree of synchrony should be a function of the strength of coupling between speakers. Secondly, the entrainment would necessarily be vuln...

Production of phonetic and phonological contrast by heritage speakers of Mandarin.

This study tested the hypothesis that heritage speakers of a minority language, due to their childhood experience with two languages, would outperform late learners in producing contrast: language-internal phonological contrast, as well as cross-linguistic phonetic contrast between similar, yet acoustically distinct, categories of different languages. To this end, production of Mandarin and Eng...
